Burglary
In 2005/06 the total number of domestic burglaries in England
and Wales was around 733,000.* Domestic burglary peaked in
the mid 1990's and fell by 59% between 1995 and 2005/06.
In 2005/06, around 2 in 100 households were burgled (this
includes attempted burglaries where nothing was taken).
The tactics used to reduce burglary range from reviewing
known burglars; to situational crime prevention (locks, bolts
and alarms); to supporting those most vulnerable to victimization
and repeat victimization, through responsible neighbour programmes.
Before starting any specific programme its important to
apply a systematic approach to the analysis of the crime
problem; as one burglary hot-spot may have a significantly
different problems to another.
It is also important to bear in mind that different areas
and different types of burglary may have different levels
of reporting; areas where there is a low level of home property
insurance or areas where bogus calling on vulnerable people
occur may well have a significant hidden level of crime.
