Alcohol Control Area

Public Drinking

Public drinking and the anti-social behaviour associated with it impacts on the perception of the physical environment, quality of life and safety of the community. Historically, nuisance caused by public drinking has been a problem in a number of areas in the borough. Groups of drinkers and their associated rowdy behaviour, intimidates people and stop them from using public spaces.

How the control area will be implemented

To deal with nuisance behaviour caused by public drinking Torfaen County Borough Council have used greater powers to penalise and confiscate alcohol from nuisance drinkers. The Council has introducing an Alcohol Control Area at Waunddu Park, Pontnewynydd. The decision will affect Waunddu Park. The new powers mean police will be able to confiscate alcohol from anyone causing a nuisance in public. If they refuse to hand over their alcohol they can be arrested and prosecuted.

The alcohol control area is not a ban. It is a way to deal with nuisance and anti-social behaviour associated with public drunkenness.

The public are encouraged not to support street drinkers by supplying them with alcohol or money and to report nuisance behaviour. If a crime is being committed ring the police on 999 and Report a Crime in Progress.
