Home Security Advice
Here are our top 10 tips for securing your home:
•
Fit deadlocks or key-operated security bolts to all external
doors and outhouses.
•
Fit an approved intruder alarm, and you will normally receive
a discount on your home and contents insurance. For a good
quality alarm, look for an NSI or SSAIB accredited installation
company.
•
Fit key-operated metal locks to all your external windows.
Burglars can't open them and know that breaking a window
will attract unwanted attention.
•
Never leave keys in a lock or in a secret hiding place, such
as under a pot or doormat -thieves know where to look, they
have a lot of practice.
•
Check all callers identity card – without one you don’t
allow access, before opening your door fully. Don't be fooled
by a uniform; check the identity card and telephone their
office if in doubt. A door chain or viewer will also help
you see the person calling.
•
Lock your garden tools and ladders away securely. Leaving
them lying around would invite burglars to use them to break
into your home, especially the opportunistic thief.
•
Before going away on your holidays or overnight visit, cancel
the milk and newspapers. Ask a friend or neighbour to keep
an eye on your house and remove any mail, especially if you
have a glass door.
•
Use an automatic electronic timer to turn on the lights in
various rooms when you're out.
•
Invisibly security mark all of your valuables with your postcode,
door name or house number and photograph them if possible – it
makes recovering them much easier.
•
If you need any help, ask your local Crime Prevention Officer
of your local police station to visit your home for advice
on securing your premises, it is usually a free service,
but check cost.
