Keep homes secure this spring and summer

With the warmer spring and summer weather upon us for the next few months, people are being urged to ensure their homes are kept secure.

People often leave windows and doors open in the warmer weather but the police are urging them to think twice before doing so.

PC Brian Voss, Leicestershire Force's crime prevention officer, said: "It is really frustrating because the majority of these crimes are preventable. People must take on board the fact that windows and doors can let in more than just fresh air."

The sun also brings out with it the distraction burglars - those that trick their way into the homes of the vulnerable and elderly and steal cash and property.

They con people into letting them into their homes and often have very plausible stories. For example it's really hot, they have broken down and can they have a cold drink or they say they are offering to do garden work, repair faulty roof tiles, crumbling masonry of the chimney or even re-tarmac the shabby driveway/path. If necessary, explain to the 'workman' to return later with photos and contact telephone numbers of at least two previous satisfied customers. Throughout the conversation do not release the 'engaged' door chain. If the workman is genuine he will return with the requested items, for an opportunity for paid work.

There is no such thing as a 'typical burglar' although the majority are men they come in many different guises and can be any age. The majority of warm weather burglaries take place whilst it is light - giving the burglar more opportunity to offer an excuse if they are discovered.

Officers urge you to follow the following simple crime prevention measures which hopefully which help you to have a crime-free summer:

No matter how hot it is, if you go out make sure that all ground floor windows and doors are shut securely. If you have window locks make sure they are used.
Even if you're just in the back garden, shut all windows and lock all doors.
When answering the door to people you don't know put on the door chain, prior to opening the door.
Always ask to see the callers' identity card. Check it carefully - genuine ID Cards should include a telephone number to check the validity of the holder, be suspicious of ID Cards devoid of independent telephone numbers displayed.
Everybody has a part to play in preventing crime. If you see somebody who isn't usually in the area and is paying close attention to people's houses, sheds or neighbours vehicles, then call Heddlu Gwent Police on (01495) 764711 or 101. If you see a burglary actually taking place Dial 999.

Also remember to remind friends and relatives, particularly the elderly, not to let strangers into their homes. We all have a Duty of Care to neighbours, friends and relatives in our community. Criminals prefer neighbourhoods whose residents are isolated, divided and lacking community spirit. Communities throughout the country with active neighbourhood watch schemes deters criminality and increase the detection of crimes, criminals and reduce the fear of crime in the community.
